Thoughts on Natural Disasters

When I heard about the earthquake that hit Haiti, I first thought what a terrible tragedy to have happened to a country already struggling. I also was reminded of something that happened about a year ago during my Czech language class. One of the class exercises we did involved speaking (in Czech) about different things involving the country we are from. Our class was very international--we had students from Mongolia, Dominican Republic, Vietnam, Ukraine, and Belarus. One day we had to share about problems found in each of our countries. Each student shared several things such as poverty, government corruption, crime, unemployment, and I was the last student chosen to share--at first the teacher looked at me and said America probably already has all that has been mentioned--I said yes we have all of those things but I have one no one has mentioned. My teacher had a surprised looked as I tried to explain in Czech the words for what we call "natural disasters". I then explained how hurricanes, tornadoes or even earthquakes can devastate an area so badly. She agreed then acknowledged that in the Czech Republic the people really haven't had to deal with such horrific catastrophes--the worst they've experienced is flooding--not all countries are so lucky.

Join with me in keeping the people of Haiti lifted up in prayer as they rebuild and work through all of the anguish this natural disaster brought to them. It is interesting to see how this tragic event is bring the world together. My prayer is that the believers of Haiti will know in a tangible way that Almighty God is greater than anything they are going through. Take care until next time.

Many Blessings,
Colleen
