My favorite Christmas Gift

Hi Everyone, I hope everyone is enjoying their Christmas holiday time. Just wanted to share a picture of one of my favorite gifts that I received this year. It is a t-shirt that dear Czech friends gave me. It is so perfect for me :-) Have you ever wondered why the path God has you on goes all over the place.
Just remember God does have a plan and as Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us "Trust in the Lord with all thy heart and lean not on your own understanding. But in all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy path." I will be getting a lot of wear out of my new shirt and as I proudly wear it--I will be asking God to help me trust in Him! I hope God is revealing His plan for your life step by step and that you walk closely with Him.

Until next time take care!

Blessings,
Colleen

PS. more pictures and post will be published soon.

Life's Biggest Question

Hi Everyone, During Thursday's LOGOS English class I wanted to give my students a challenging spiritual question to discuss. So I turned to one of my favorite films, "Simon Birch". First a little background info about the film... Simon Birch is about the friendship of two 12 year old boys (Simon & Joe). Both boys are treated as outcasts as Simon is very small for his age & is easily made fun of because of how he looks while Joe was born out of wedlock and doesn't know the identity of his father. Simon believes very strongly that one day God is going to make him a hero. He doesn't know how or when but speaks often about it with his friend Joe & others. There is a point in the film where things aren't going very well for Simon and he is wrestling with life's biggest question. He goes to the minister of the church that he's been attending and ask this question, "Does God have a plan for us? " So the task I gave my students was to imagine that Simon was sitting with us and asking each one of us that question. They were to formulate a response with a partner and be ready to defend their answer.

We had a good discussion and several people were able to share some of their personal experiences that brought them to the realization that God does have a plan for us. We also spoke about how someone could discover God's plan through prayer, reading the bible and to fellowship with others through a local church. I was proud of my students it isn't easy sometimes sharing spiritual concepts in a second language they are learning.

My prayer for my students is not only do they believe God has a plan but that they with all their heart seek out God and fulfill the plan He has for them individually and corporately.

Until next time, take care!

Many Blessings,
Colleen

Catching Up With Colleen

Hi Everyone, This is my first attempt at putting together a video for my blog--I hope you're able to access it and that you enjoy it. I realized after putting it together I wanted to mention a few more details. The most exciting thing was I recently passed with flying colors a four part Czech Proficiency Exam. The exam covered reading comprehension, listening comprehension, along with writing and speaking. I was pretty nervous since each section was timed but everything turned out great. I am now working with my Czech teacher preparing for the next proficiency test level. I really appreciate the teacher I have found. I tell her all the time that she is a gift from God. We have a lesson each week and she has helped me get more comfortable in speaking Czech.

I'm constantly looking at ways to practice speaking the language. It helps me to have a Czech roommate who converses only in Czech with me as well. One of my funniest language blunders was the time I asked her if she needed more "bear" for her tea but what I wanted to say was "more honey". In Czech "med" means honey; "medved" means bear (so oops I got those two words confused). I continue to see progress and that's so important since Czech and English are such completely different languages.

Hope all is going well and until next time, take care!

Blessings,
Colleen

Bring A Friend to Jesus

Hi Everyone, Yesterday during our Sunday School class, we looked at the story of the four friends who brought their paralyzed friend to Jesus. There was no place for the men to enter the house so they went to the roof and lowered him down to Jesus. We had a great discussion with the kids about how to bring their friends to Jesus. The story is found in the 2nd chapter of the Gospel of Mark.

It is so exciting to see how the kids are thinking beyond themselves. We are looking at having an activity which will give the kids a chance to bring their friends and share about Jesus. I can't wait to see how it all works out.

I hope by the time we have the activity the weather will have warmed up. We have had a fairly mild winter so far but I took a look at the upcoming weather forecast & it doesn't look so good. We are suppose to get a pretty good blast of cold air coming from Russia--I'm already wearing 2 layers of clothes--I may have to go for three :-)

Hope all is well and until next time, take care!

Blessings,
Colleen

The Day in the Life of Jesus

Hi Everyone, Today at church I helped with the 10-12 year old Sunday school class. We are studying the Gospel of Mark. It is a great way for me to practice speaking Czech and at the same time share God's love with the kids. During my preparations, I came across a great prop to show the kids. It was a cloth to clean shoes with and I received it several years ago at a "Lead like Jesus" conference. I was so excited to have the opportunity to show it to the kids and explain in Czech what it is used for. We had a great time together talking about our daily and weekly schedule and then reading in the first chapter of Mark, what Jesus' daily schedule looked like. He always found time to pray and converse with His Father. He left us such a great example to follow. May we look for ways to serve as Jesus did but more importantly may we serve from a pure heart that only wants to bring honor and glory to God.

Hope all is well and until next time, take care!

Blessings,
Colleen

My Furry Friend

Here's a picture of my furry friend who has adopted me. As you can see she is enjoying our bench in the kitchen :-)

I've been Adopted :-)

HI Everyone, I have an animal story to share...My landlord has a beautiful 3 year old female cat. She is quite big and doesn't like when it is cold or rainy outside. The funny thing is since late November it has been cold and rainy here so my little furry friend has decided to adopt me and my cozy bedroom. It is so funny whenever I'm in my room, she'll climb up on the outside of my bedroom windowsill and cry until I let her in. When I lived in Tampa, I had a cat for about nine years so my heart has a soft spot for big fluffy cats :-) I just really have a hard time hearing a cat cry and scratch to come inside and since the house where my apartment is doesn't have a cat-door (and my landlord lives on the second floor); I started opening my window and letting the cat in. She is quite content to curl up on the bench in the kitchen or at the end of my bed. When she gets hungry I put her out in the main hallway so she can run upstairs (where she really lives) and get fed. We understand each other quite well. When she jumps up near my bedroom window, I know that means she wants to go back outside.

It is kind of nice to be adopted and have an animal to snuggle up with. Plus, I don't have the normal responsibilities for her since she adopted me :-) Hope all is going well and until next time, take care.

Blessings,
Colleen

PS. I'll post a picture of my furry friend.

Happy New Year (2012)

Hi Everyone, Here are a few pictures from last evening's New Year's Eve gathering. We had a group of nine people. We played the game "Activity" and watched a Czech film while enjoying one another.

Hi Everyone,

May the presence of the Lord Jesus be your experience throughout this Christmas season and into the new year 2012!!

Until next time take care!
Many Blessings!

Thanksgiving Greetings

Hi Everyone: I am reflecting on the many blessings God bestows on me each and everyday. One of the biggest is the opportunity to live and work here in the Czech Republic. I so enjoy investing my time and energy in Czechs and helping them learn about the creator God who loves them and has a great plan for their lives. I'm willing to forsake a typical "Thanksgiving" to serve my faithful Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Enjoy your turkey dinner and have an extra scoop of dressing for me.

Until next time, take care.

Love and Blessings,
Colleen

It's been a year!?

Hi Everyone, It is hard to believe but I returned a year ago on the 16th of November...
Here are some highlights of my first year of my second term...

November 2010-- The biggest highlight of the month was returning "home" on 16th of Nov. That first week-end I went with Czech friends Jana and Jirka to special LOGOS English retreat. It was a great way to reconnect with Czech friends. As I reconnected--it was bitter sweet because my roommate Olga was getting married in less than 3 weeks.

December 2010 -- One of the biggest highlights was seeing my roommate Olga get married to Petr on the 4th of the month. I had a wonderful Christmas time as I began to reconnect with Czech friends. On the 26th of Dec. I went cross-country skiing for the first time in my life. I had fun trying out the skis I had bought several years earlier. Later in the week I traveled by train to the north part of the country to visit Marie (Olga's cousin) and her family. I was there for a few days during Christmas break. There was lots of snow and Marie's children took me sled riding. It was a lot of fun riding on a Czech style sled.

Jan 2011 -- I continued to adjust to being back in Brno and also adjusting to living alone again. I started my work permit and visa renewal processes. At the end of the month, I began a two week intensive Czech language course at the university.

Feb. 2011 -- I successfully completed the 2 week intensive course and took a week break before starting a semester long full time Czech language program for Foreigners at the university. I was placed in the Pre-Intermediate level I and II classes after completing a placement grammar test. I hadn't taken a Czech grammar test in close to two years so I was pleased with the results. I received a two year work permit and went several times to check on long term residence permit.

March 2011 -- The Czech semester long coursework was keeping me very busy. This month a highlight was helping my former roommate and her husband prepare for a trip to Tampa, Florida. I was so excited that they would finally get a chance to travel to America. Olga had never been on a plane before. I tried to give them all kinds of pointers as they prepared for their trip :-)

April 2011 -- I was super busy with my studies but did manage to take a small break around Easter and helped my friends (Jana & Jirka) in their backyard. They torn down their old fence and was preparing to replace it. I spent Easter Day with them as well and Jana cooked a traditional Czech Easter meal--it was so delicious--duck, bread style dumplings, and sauerkraut. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! I was still working on my long term residence permit.

May 2011 -- The end was in sight for the completion of my semester long Czech program at the university. I remember doing lots of preparations for my final exams. It was a stressful time but I was so relieved when it was all over. My brain was totally fried by the end of the semester. I was trying so hard to memorize all the new Czech I was learning. Two other important highlights for this month... on my birthday Olga and Petr took me to Kridla where Olga's parents live. Olga's mother surprised me with a homemade traditional Czech birthday cake--it was delicious. Another huge milestone--I found a Czech teacher, Lenka to help me continue to improve my Czech speaking ability. I went to check on my status of the residence permit-- I had to wait four hours in line just to get to the waiting room to sit down and wait for someone to call my number. The process is going through a lot of changes.

June 2011 -- I continued to study Czech with my new teacher. I was preparing for a busy summer with such things as traveling for friendship evangelism with Czech friends, preparations for two English camps and special hiking trips with Czech friends. One highlight that stands out was seeing remnants of the Iron Curtain in the south part of the Czech Republic. I remember growing up hearing about the Iron Curtain but not fully realizing what it entailed. Put the following link in your url to see pictures of it: http://skydrive.live.com/?cid=e546d58992db031d#!/?cid=e546d58992db031d&sc=photos&id=E546D58992DB031D!151

July 2011 -- This was a super busy month... I was in Decin visiting with Marie and her two kids. We did a lot of hiking and I practiced speaking Czech with them. I was there for 5 days. The following week-end I had a friend from Tampa visit with me. A big highlight was having my Czech teacher teach me how to cook Czech food. I found out it is a great way to practice utilizing my Czech language ability plus I continued to learn more about the Czech culture. My Czech teacher has promised to teach me all the recipes that her grandmother had shown her :-) In the middle of the July, English camps started. I was part of the Czech preparation team for the first camp plus I helped take care of and teach English to the 3-5 year old class.

August 2011 -- As that first camp was ending, the Multi camp with the Inspiration group was beginning. I taught English to adults/beginner level at that 2nd camp. I enjoyed both camps and saw God working in many of the non-believers lives. I continue to build relationships with many of the campers. God is always at work. Please continue to pray that the seeds that have been sown would take root and grow strong. All for God's honor and glory. I was exhausted after the 2nd camp and immediately after the 2nd camp, I packed for a week vacation in the Tatra mountains with Czech friends Jana and Jirka. We had a great time and the Tatra mountains in Slovakia are just breath taking beautiful. Another highlight in August was my new roommate Iva Kristova moved in at the end of the month. Iva is learning English but we only speak Czech together. I was so excited for the chance to practice over and over speaking Czech with her.

September 2011 -- this was a very special month. At church we concentrated on principals from Andrew Murray's book 'Waiting on God", additional prayer times for community and personal reflections. I also attended a five day spiritual retreat in Budapest. Plus I ended the month at the annual prayer retreat week-end with my brothers and sisters of Brno Fellowship church. I continued my Czech lessons with my Czech teacher and also found Czech language partners to practice speaking Czech with.
I also continued to find opportunities to move into more ministry involvement from Czech language and culture learner.

October 2011 -- I started teaching in the LOGOS program by teaching adults once a week English at the high intermediate level. Every 5th lesson we have a spiritual discussion class. I am thoroughly enjoying my classes. Some of my other ministry opportunities involve helping the ADO Brno Gospel choir with the English pronunciations of contemporary Gospel songs, helping Czechs with translations of texts for websites, helping Czechs with conversing in English and friendship evangelism--I constantly am building relationships with Czechs and sharing my life with them which gives me opportunities to share about my Saviour Jesus Christ. FYI-- I finally can rejoice because I received my long term residence permit on the 12th of the month. I started working on this process in January.

November 2011 -- I continue to study Czech with my teacher and practice speaking Czech with my roommate along with my Czech language partners. One of the highlights of this month was an outreach English opportunity in Klobouky. Klobouky is a village outside of Brno. Several of my students live there and we had an English day there. I taught intermediate/high intermediate students. We talked about our life journey. So many exciting things are going on as I looked to God to continue to direct my steps to the work He has here for me.

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. I truly do appreciate it. Until next time take care. Many blessings. Colleen
