Life's Biggest Question

Hi Everyone, During Thursday's LOGOS English class I wanted to give my students a challenging spiritual question to discuss. So I turned to one of my favorite films, "Simon Birch". First a little background info about the film... Simon Birch is about the friendship of two 12 year old boys (Simon & Joe). Both boys are treated as outcasts as Simon is very small for his age & is easily made fun of because of how he looks while Joe was born out of wedlock and doesn't know the identity of his father. Simon believes very strongly that one day God is going to make him a hero. He doesn't know how or when but speaks often about it with his friend Joe & others. There is a point in the film where things aren't going very well for Simon and he is wrestling with life's biggest question. He goes to the minister of the church that he's been attending and ask this question, "Does God have a plan for us? " So the task I gave my students was to imagine that Simon was sitting with us and asking each one of us that question. They were to formulate a response with a partner and be ready to defend their answer.

We had a good discussion and several people were able to share some of their personal experiences that brought them to the realization that God does have a plan for us. We also spoke about how someone could discover God's plan through prayer, reading the bible and to fellowship with others through a local church. I was proud of my students it isn't easy sometimes sharing spiritual concepts in a second language they are learning.

My prayer for my students is not only do they believe God has a plan but that they with all their heart seek out God and fulfill the plan He has for them individually and corporately.

Until next time, take care!

Many Blessings,
Colleen
